For 2 1/2 quarters, the Shawnee Mission Northwest Cougars were suffering from a Manhattan hangover, as they were down by 7 points to Hays in the consolation round of the Mid America Classic.

Northwest, which had led Manhattan for all of regulation until the Indians tied it at the end and then won it overtime, struggled with Hays until ending the third period on a 7-0 run to get the game tied at 26.

The Cougars continued that momentum in the fourth quarter for a 36-32 victory to move into the fifth-place game against either Shawnee Mission South or Ulysses. The Indians will play the loser of that game for seventh place in the first game Saturday.

The Cougars opened up a 5-point lead in the fourth quarter of what was a rough-and-tumble affair as there was lot of contact allowed and Hays missed chance after chance to perhaps pull out the game.

Jordann Nachbar, whose two free throws with 10 seconds left clinched it for the Cougars, just missed a double-double with team highs of 9 points and 14 rebounds. Savannah Schneider led Hays with 8.
