Points, for the second straight game in the consolation bracket of the Mid America Classic, continued to be hard to come by.

Ulysses and Shawnee Mission South struggled throughout their game, which was tied at 30-all through three quarters.

Ulysses’ defense was especially stifling in the fourth quarter as it crept past South 39-35 to advance to the fifth-place game, not to mention it avoided potential sub-state foe Hays.

The Tigers, who won their first-ever Classic game, play Shawnee Mission Northwest on Saturday, which follows Hays and Shawnee Mission South.

A personal 5-0 run by Ulysses’ Gina Ballesteros in the fourth quarter propelled the Tigers into the lead and they protected it over the final 3 minutes.

It was a nice comeback by the Tigers, who at one point in the first half trailed by 10 points and were down 21-14 at the break.

Ballesteros led the winners with 15, while Riley Oglevie pulled down 11 rebounds. The Tigers prevailed despite making just 14 of 48 shots.

Meredith Bunker topped the Raiders with 9. Turnovers did them in as they had 23 and they also made just 13 of 36 shots.
