Once Shawnee Mission Northwest lost in the first round to Manhattan in overtime in the first round of the Mid America Classic, the consensus was the Cougars would be able to come back comfortably for fifth place.

They didn’t disappoint, finishing fifth with a 38-26 slow-motion victory over Ulysses in the second game of the day.

Neither team played with a lot of mojo in the first half, which ended with the Cougars up 15-4 as the Tigers were just 1 of 14, 0 of 4 from 3-point. It was the second time in the tournament Ulysses had scored in single digits in the first half.

The pace finally picked up in the second half, but this one was all Cougars until the finish.

Hannah Black, who had made her mark on Thursday for her defensive work on Manhattan’s Christianna Carr by holding her to 1 of 10, showed some offensive prowess with a team-leading 15 points for the Cougars. Jordann Nachber followed with 11.

Gina Ballesteros topped Ulysses with 14. The Tigers will return to the Roundhouse in March for the sub-state.
