AUSTIN, Texas — McPherson College’s baseball team began its 2018 season with a bang over the weekend during its first road trip to Texas.
The Bulldogs swept Huston-Tilloston in a four-game set.
• Mac 18, Huston-Tilloston 2 — The Bulldogs exploded for a pair of seven-run innings and rapped out 15 hits.
Trevor Haycock drove in three runs to lead the way, while Reily Martin scored four and drove in two. Evan Willow, Trent Smith, Desmond Grayson and Isaac Taylor all had two hits. Matthew Green went five innings and fanned 11 to pick up the win.
• Mac 8, Huston-Tilloston — It was 1-1 through five innings, but the Bulldogs erupted for seven runs over the next two innings to support the solid pitching of Chad Gotto and Brett Carter. Gotto went 5 1/3, with Carter finishing up.
Dominick Ramos was 3 for 4, while Jakob Shields and Haycock had two hits apiece.
• Mac 5, Huston-Tilloston 2 — It was scoreless until the fourth when the Bulldogs did most of their damage with four runs.
Both teams had five hits in the game. Haycock’s double was the only extra-base hit. Luke Whitfield was the winner, with Bailey Porter and Jarrod Manick finishing up. Taylor had two hits.
• Mac 11, Huston-Tilloston 1 — Josh Lewis was the winning pitcher, fanning nine. Christian Casados and Tyler Dunn closed it out.
Lane Fleming had a monster game by going 4 for 4 with three RBIs. Haycock drove in five and stroked a double among his two hits.
Mac heads back to the warm weather of Texas next weekend for four more games, two against Texas College and two against Jarvis Christian College.
