MAIZE — McPherson’s eighth-grade girls’ A-team picked up a key road win on Monday as some hot shooting by Lauren Labertew sparked the Bullpups to a 43-36 victory over Maize.
Labertew made 4 3-pointers and one of them resulted in a 4-point play as she scored 17 points, while Peyton Howard added 10.
“The A-team was really challenged and we struggled keeping the ball in front of us in the first half,” said MMS coach Jay Crawford, whose team is 10-2. “We need to continue to work on containing the ball and not allowing it to get down the middle of paint. We played really well in the third quarter on both ends of the court, we held them to 4 points in the third quarter. To have the ball go through the basket really gave us energy on the defensive end.”
The B-team was a 28-13 winner to move to 11-1 and had good balance as Labertew had 6 points in her short stint.
“The B-team played in a very difficult officiated game, but once again showed me the toughness to just compete and play through a lot of bad calls,” Crawford said. “This group will never quit and I know they will not back down. Their defense continue to make a difference for them.”
