McPherson’s seventh-grade boys lost yet another close basketball game here Monday as they were nipped by Maize, 30-29.
Hunter Alvord’s 11 points led the Bullpups.
“This team is certainly battle-tested,” MMS coach Eric Burghart said. “Of our now 7 losses, 3 were within 2 points and 2 have been within 5. That certainly doesn't take the sting out of tonight's, it may actually make it feel worse, but even though we didn't come out on top, I continue to see improvement in our late-game composure. If we could come out in the first half with half of the aggressiveness and fire that we show in the fourth then we wouldn't put ourselves in the position to need the referees to make the call we need or put me in the position to draw up a play that doesn't quite get it done for us at the end. The beautiful thing about the Pioneer League is that it's not the NCAA, everybody gets into the tournament and everybody starts with a 0-0 record.”
The B-team also was edged, 28-26. Joe Brawner led MMS with 6 points.
“Another close one for these boys as well,” Burghart said. “One turnover here and a missed pass there and this one ends in our favor. It's really fun to think back to the first or second week of the season and see how far we've come as a group. It would've been great if we could've rewarded ourselves and our improvement with a ‘W,’ but the continued effort and teaching moments are what make this group fun. Roman Mai and Joe Brawner have been integral to keeping us in a position to be in games and we'll need them in a big way on Thursday at Newton if we want to end this season with a win.”
