McPherson’s eighth-grade girls closed out their A-team regular-season basketball schedule in style on Thursday with a 56-10 thumping of Newton.
Peyton Howard led MMS with 16 points and Ella Schmid tallied 14. Lauren Labertew just missed double figures with 9.
“This was our last regular-season game and to close it out on our home court was really exciting for the team,” MMS coach Jay Crawford said. “We started slow, but as soon as the girls made a couple baskets they were off and running. It was nice to see them out in the open court sharing the ball with each other. I thought our effort got so much better in the second half and it showed in our play. The A-team finished their regular season 11-2 and will go into the Pioneer League Tournament as the No. 2 seed this Saturday in the Roundhouse.”
There was no B-game. MMS’ season is over with an 11-1 record.
“This group improved a lot throughout their season and they came to practice every day and competed and that is why in games they just dominated teams,” Crawford said. “Our B-team only gave up 106 total points for the whole season and scored 417. This group held two teams scoreless (A Team held 1 team scoreless also). The B-team only gave up 9 points per game and they were able to take teams out of their offenses.”
