NEWTON — McPherson’s seventh-grade boys are now just a game under .500 after a 50-28 rout of Newton on Thursday.
It was a rarity for seventh-grade boys in that four players hit for double figures. Hunter Alvord and Dawson Feil tallied 13 apiece, and Sam Becker and Mason Miller scored 10 apiece as MMS improved to 6-7.
“Once again we started slow from the jump,” MMS coach Eric Burghart said. “I have to quickly find a way to engage these guys so that we're ready to explode from the starting blocks. With that being said, this team has shown throughout most of the year that they play their best basketball in the second half and tonight was no different. This team has shown that when we play our brand of basketball, we're a tough out and it'll be essential that we do that moving forward as we will have a tough road to the final day of the tournament.”
The B-team finished its season 4-9 with a 29-20 loss. Mason Clark’s 8 points were tops.
“Scoring was tough to come by in our final B-game of the season,” Burghart said. “Our ball control wasn't strong enough and we had some tough misses underneath our basket. Nick Brawner played by far his best game of the year and was all over the court tonight. This certainly isn't how we wanted to finish our year, but I will make one excuse for this group and our disappointing record is that we never seemed to all get healthy at the same time. A few gone here and a couple gone there whether it was sickness or injury and it really makes it difficult to get into a rhythm as a group. This group (coached by Cody Cape) grew so much throughout the year, whether that growth was through confidence, knowledge of the game or socially.”
