McPherson’s seventh-grade girls celebrated their last regular-season home game on Thursday by knocking off Newton, 31-18.

“Last night was a great team effort,” MMS coach Kaleigh Huxman said. “We defended well, made great passes and moved the ball as a unit. It is exciting to head into the tournament with a win.”

MMS will take on Derby at noon at McPherson High.

Alexis Dukes tallied 13 points and Ella Buschbom chipped in with 9.

The B-team lost 20-16 despite 5 points by Sayge Salmons.

“Tough way to end the season, but it was an extremely fun game,” MMS coach TJ Jacson said.  “In between the game and writing this all I have heard is how hard those girls worked, how intense they were and that the people who watched are proud of their efforts. They are great girls and I am excited to be able to have coached them.”

MMS B (16) — Salmons 5, Patterson 3, Yianakopulos 2, Lacy 2, Lang 2, Engelbrecht 2.
