PITTSBURG — The McPherson College indoor track and field teams set a pair of school records and 22 personal bests on Day 1 of the 2018 Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference (KCAC) Indoor Track and Field Championships Friday at the Robert W. Plaster Center on the campus of Pittsburg State University.
McPherson ranks fourth in the men's race with 21 points and eighth in the women's race with 5 points, with the majority of point-scoring opportunities to come on Saturday. Friends leads both team races over second-place Saint Mary, holding a 59-point cushion (84-25) in the women's standings and a six-point advantage (49-43) in the men's standings.
The first record came in the women's 3,200-meter relay where the quartet of Taylor Dreiling, Rachel Foreman, Ane' Archuleta and Samantha Nelson finished fifth with a time of 10:27.10, eclipsing the year-old mark of 10:38.73 set at last year's KCAC Championships.
McPherson's other point came in the weight throw as Dejalynn Saili placed eighth with a throw of 12.87 meters (42-2.75). Ivanna Moyer added a season-best in the event with a toss of 10.48 meters (34-4.75).
Kaylynn Lyons also posted a PR after clearing 4.11 meters (13-6) in the long jump.
Amy Braimbridge won her preliminary heats in both the 60 dash and 200 and was the top qualifier for both finals. Braimbridge posted one of four Bulldog PRs in the 60 with a 7.83-second clocking. Miaya Sample and Diamond Blaylock-Norris both crossed the line with 8.21 PRs, missing the final transfer spot by just 0.04 seconds. Destiny Johnson provided the final PR with a time of 8.33.
In the 200, all six Bulldogs posted at least an indoor PR. Braimbridge led the way with a 25.38, followed by Genevie Rivera (26.59), Blaylock-Norris (26.78), Cierra Lee (26.88), Johnson (27.27) and Sample (27.91).
Camille Baugh qualified for the 60 hurdles final after posting a 9.94. She has the sixth-best qualifying time for the final.
The McPherson men began the defense of their 2017 KCAC crown with a third-place finish from Alex Polakow in the pole vault. Polakow cleared a personal-best 3.25 meters (10-8).
All three Bulldog participants in the weight throw came away with PRs. Dylan Templeman finished fourth with a toss of 15.34 meters (50-4) and Tanner Trigg finished eighth with a mark of 13.68 meters (44-10.75), while Abel Villarreal checked in with a throw of 13.26 meters (43-6).
McPherson also had a pair of Top-8 finishes in the 5,000 as Jonathan Dominguez finished fifth with a PR time 15:47.68 and Jesse Freeman added a personal season-best time with his sixth-place time of 15:58.21.
Freeman also ran a leg on the Bulldogs' seventh-place 3,200 relay, teaming with Kevin Boeckman, Felix Cervantes and Casey Zimmerman for a 8:16.50 clocking.
McPherson will be well represented in Saturday's men's sprint finals.
Amari Heisser and Bryson Crayton finished 1-2 in their preliminary heat and both advanced. Heisser's time of 8.55 seconds was the top qualifying time overall and broke the McPherson school record of 8.62 seconds set by Jordan King in 2007. Crayton qualified sixth overall with his 9.04.
Like Braimbridge, Hunter Sury posted the top qualifying times in both the 60 dash (6.94) and the 200 (22.18) and he will lead a three-Bulldog contingent into both event finals on Saturday. Xavier Taylor also qualified for both finals as the No. 6 qualifier - both in personal-record times. He posted a 7.11 in the 60 and a 22.59 in the 200.
Matthew Bouwkamp picked up the final transfer spot in the 60 with a 7.12 clocking, while Alexander Bengtsson grabbed the last slot in the 200 final with a 22.69. Bouwkamp added a PR time of 22.89 in the 200.
