McPherson’s seventh-grade boys basketball season came to an end on Saturday with a 57-41 loss to Hutchinson in the first round of the Pioneer League Tournament.
Mason Miller topped the Bullpups with 13 points as they finished the year 6-8. Hunter Alvord chipped in with 12.
“Hutch was better throughout and I was outcoached,” MMS’ Eric Burghart said. “On our drive home, I was pretty disappointed with my offensive calls and frankly should've switched it up on defense. Whether it was ignorance or being stubborn I certainly didn't do my part to help us win today.”
Burghart says this team has the potential to be better down the road.
“I'm not a great basketball coach and have never claimed to be, but I am a decent teacher and if (assistant coach Cody) Cape and I taught this team enough so that next year they can win a championship with coach Brown then I consider that a success,” he said. “It's just frustrating because they are such good young men and such hard workers that we wanted it in the worst way for them. I look at their effort levels and I look at the coaches they'll learn from in the future and I'm very excited to see this group grow up.”
Burghart said the season was more about wins and losses.
“This season has been about so much more than basketball for a majority of these boys,” he said. “I will never forget the practice when we all came in hurting pretty bad and we just played and got after it. I believe that in some way that practice, this season, was healing for them. In no way am I making an excuse for our early exit, just wanted to let these guys know how proud of them I am, how much I love them and how thankful I am for the game of basketball if only for that one day.”
