McPherson’s eighth-grade girls had no trouble in their first-round game of the Pioneer League Basketball Tournament on Saturday, knocking off Derby North 34-16 at the Roundhouse.
The Bullpups blew out to a big lead due to their stifling defense, then maintained the margin the rest of the game.
Peyton Howard scored 12 points to lead MMS, while Ella Schmid and Lauren Labertew scored 9 and 8, respectively, as the team had good balance at the top.
“It was really nice to be able to play on the Roundhouse court,” MMS coach Jay Crawford said. “Such a special place. It was a really early game time start for all teams and it showed. We played in spurts and we play so much better when we play with all-out effort. This is something on Monday we will need to have in order to reach our season-long goal, which is to get to the championship game. The first game of tournaments are always tough and we are moving on and we will continue to make plays for each other like we have all season. We will be ready, this team won this tournament as seventh-graders and they really want to defend their title.”
MMS plays Hutchinson at 6:30 at the Roundhouse on Monday.
