McPherson’s eighth-grade girls won the Pioneer League basketball championship as seventh-graders last year.

They are one win away from completing a double.

The Bullpups advanced to the finals of the postseason tournament on Monday at the Roundhouse by shutting down Hutchinson, 35-20.

MMS will play Salina Lakewood at 6:30 p.m. Thursday for the championship.

Lauren Labertew led MMS with 13 points and Marissa Pearcy added 7.

“Getting to the finals was our goal to start our season and we are going to meet a really good Lakewood team who we lost to in overtime earlier in the season,” MMS coach Jay Crawford said. “We knew we would see them in the finals and we know it is going to be a battle. Since that loss, we have won 8 in a row. We will have to compete on every possession and give our best effort.”

MMS (35) — Doile 2, Courtney 2, Schmid 3, Whorton 4, Howard 4, Pearcy 7, Labertew 13.
