McPherson High’s wrestling team can complete a perfect 5-0 run through Division III of the AVCTL on Thursday when it goes to Winfield.
Wellington, which is in Division IV, also is there for what is a 5:00 triangular.
The Bullpups’ focus, though, is on Winfield. The Vikings came to McPherson last year and defeated the Bullpups 47-26 in this same situation as they captured the league title while MHS was unbeaten.
“Gonna be a war,” said MHS coach Doug Kretzer, whose team is coming off its best tournament performance of the season by taking second against a strong field at Rose Hill. “Both teams are a mirror image. Some hammers, some really good kids and all weights will be filled. We are fighting the flu, which could really impact our lineup.”
MHS also could be without 182-pounder Luke Thompson, who was injured at Rose Hill and his status is questionable.
“We'll be ready, they'll be ready, should be a fun dual,” Kretzer said. “The team wrestled great Friday and Saturday, hopefully we’re peaking at the right time.”
Winfield also was at Rose Hill last week. The Vikings scored 98 points to finish in eighth. Their top wrestlers are 182-pounder Owen Braungardt (24-3) 152-pounder Steele Morin (21-10) and 106-pounder Braden Ledford (19-9). The Vikes are a team of future as they do not have a single senior in their lineup.
