McPherson High’s Mya Kretzer has spent her wrestling season going up against boys and has won nearly 20 matches.

On Saturday, it was her chance to go up against girls and she went 5-0 to win the 113-pound class of the Kansas Girls Wrestling Championships before a big crowd at the Roundhouse.

Behind Kretzer and 138-pound runner-up Haley Schafer, the Bullpups won the team title for the second year in a row.

Kretzer, who also was the meet’s Outstanding Wrestler, won two of her matches by falls and was given a run in her third match by Raegan Stinemetze of Spring Hill. Kretzer won an 11-10 decision, which proved to be her toughest match as she won 10-1 in the finals over Anayka Besco of Rose Hill.

“Mya wrestled lights-out in a tough bracket,” MHS coach Doug Kretzer said. “The girl she wrestled in the finals from Rose Hill was an All-American last year in the USA wrestling folk style nationals tournament. That match was easily the biggest match of the tournament. Winning in the tournament, as well as the coaches’ vote as the most outstanding wrestler in the tournament, was a nice way to end her girls season.”

Schafer won two of her matches by falls and also won a 4-3 decision. She was outlasted 5-0 in the finals by Morgan Mayginnes of Onaga.

“Haley had a great tournament as well,” Kretzer said. “She’s only a sophomore and her wrestling skills really made a level jump this year. I look for big things out of her next season.”

Madison Skytte was another high placer for MHS, taking third at 182. All three of her wins came via the pin.

The Bullpups’ depth vaulted them to their second straight team title as they scored 133 points, well ahead of second-place Fort Scott, which scored 74.
