EL DORADO — The already greatest season in McPherson High boys swimming history got a little greater on Saturday when the Bullpups lapped the field at the AVCTL Division II-III-IV Championships.

MHS, which squeaked out a victory last year, ran away and hid from the competition in overpowering fashion.

“Last year we won by 20 points over Andover Central and had three first-place finishes out of 11 events,” MHS coach Matt Morrow said. “This year we won by 144 points over Maize South and had seven first-place finishes. That's quite an accomplishment for these guys. Not just the first-place finishes, but 7 of the 8 individual events we scored points from all four McPherson swimmers entered in that event.”

Dawson VanGoethem and Justus Hampton were both double individual winners, while Will Powers also won an individual race. Those three, along with Jori VanGoethem, made up the winning 200 medley relay team, while the 400 freestyle relay team of Powers, Hampton, Dawson VanGoethem and Gavin Soukup also took first.

The Bullpups compiled a staggering 514 points while Maize South was second with 370. Andover Central totaled 304 and the rest of the field was less than 200.

“What a fantastic season it has been so far,” Morrow said. “We will be back in the pool for the final event of the season this coming Friday for the Kansas State Boys 5-1A Championships.  It should be a great meet with lots of top competition.”

MHS now has won 9 of 11 meets this season and finished second in the other two. In one of those, the Bullpups were outlasted in the final event of the day by less than a second to determine the outcome.

The Bullpups will have a multitude of entries at state and should qualify for the finals in several events. MHS is expected to have its highest finish in school history.
