WICHITA — McPherson College’s nationally ranked men’s tennis team began its spring season on Sunday with a 5-3 victory over Newman University, an NCAA Division II school.

Mac, currently No. 20 in the NAIA national poll, led 2-1 after the three doubles matches, then went 3-2 in singles, with one match not completed.

“I was very happy with how our team competed today," Mac coach Dustin Wheeler said. "Freshmen stepped up big and showed up to play. We have a lot room to grow, but very satisfied with our effort and energy today."

The Bulldogs head to Hastings, Neb., on Saturday to take on a Bronco team that is 3-0 and receiving votes in the national poll.
