FORT WORTH, Texas – McPherson College’s softball team opened its season over the weekend by competing in the Cowtown Classic that featured many strong teams.
The Bulldogs were 2-2, with their last game postponed.
Mac started strong with wins over Briar Cliff (3-1) and College of St. Mary (6-2) before losing to national powers Oklahoma City (10-1) and Bellevue (9-0).
The final scheduled game with Our Lady of the Lake University was cancelled due to weather.
• Mac 3, Briar Cliff 1 — Newcomer Kimberly Grice made an immediate impact by going 3 for 4 with a homer and double, good for all three RBIs. Chelsea Conrad also collected three hits, while Jessica Jones and Maile Deutsch added two hits apiece. Christie Betker was the winner and did not allow an earned run while fanning eight and walking just one.
• Mac 6, College of St. Mary 2 — Trice stayed on a rampage, with a double and single to drive in three more runs. Jones and Amanda Connell both had two hits. Sydney Lang was the winner in relief, pitching four scoreless innings.
• Oklahoma City 10, Mac 1 — The Bulldogs stepped up in competition, managing only one hit, that by Jones. Errors hurt the Bulldogs in this game as they committed four as Betker took the loss, with nearly half the runs unearned.
• Bellevue 9, Mac 0 — The defense again sprang a leak, as this time five errors made seven of the nine runs unearned to make a loser of Lang. Mac had three singles in the game.
The Bulldogs head to Guymon, Okla., this weekend to take on Panhandle State for four games.
