Last home game for Bulldogs on Wednesday

Win or lose here Wednesday, McPherson College’s women’s basketball team will most likely clinch a KCAC Tournament playoff berth when it hosts Saint Mary.

The Bulldogs are 10-10 in the KCAC, two games up on Ottawa for the eighth and final spot. They need only to win one more game or for Ottawa to lose one more to wrap up a spot.

The 8-12 Braves face a monstrous uphill climb on Wednesday as they travel to Friends to take on the KCAC champion Falcons, who clinched the title long ago as they are 18-2 in the conference and winners of 11 straight.

The Bulldogs actually are just a game out of fifth as Tabor, Sterling and Kansas Wesleyan are all 11-9 — three teams they have beaten the second time through the schedule. Mac closes out the regular season on Saturday at Bethel.

Game time is 6 p.m. There is a McPherson flavor as former Bullpup Janae Barnes is playing for the Spires (averaging 6 points and 5.5 rebounds) while two-time Kansas Gatorade Player of the Year Katelyn Loecker is an assistant coach after having completed a stellar four-year career at Oklahoma State.

There’s also plenty for the Mac men to play for even though they’re out of the playoff hunt. They have won their last four at the Sport Center, the last loss coming when they blew a 20-point halftime lead to last-place Bethany. Mac has defeated Tabor, Sterling, Friends and Kansas Wesleyan in this 4-0 streak and also won at York as they are 5-4 the second time through the KCAC after being 1-10 the first time.

Saint Mary is in a four-way tie for second at 13-7 as it’s grouped with Oklahoma Wesleyan, Kansas Wesleyan and Friends. York and Tabor are 12-8 as there’s plenty of jostling going on to host a first-round KCAC game. The top four finishers receive the first-round game at home.
