HUTCHINSON — McPherson High’s ninth-grade boys held off Maize 35-34 on Monday to win the Hutchinson Invitational Basketball Tournament.
Adam Elliott and Jayton Alexander carried much of the offensive load with 17 and 11 points, respectively.
“First of all, I am extremely proud of our team winning this tournament,” MHS coach Treg Fawl said. “We were the only 4A school and we battled as hard as we could all three games. We did not have our best offensive night. We struggled shooting the ball and getting comfortable.”
Maize was a worthy foe.
“Give Maize credit,” Fawl said. “I loved how our team competed on defense tonight. We won the game because of our toughness. We were able to get key stops down the stretch. This freshman group has grown a lot this year. They are all coachable, selfless and love to play together. They show up every day ready to go. They do not care if they are smaller or not as athletic, they just want to compete and play. I could not be more proud of these kids.”
