HESSTON — Hesston High’s tennis team will be taking a full crew to the Class 3-2-1A State Tournament next week at Wichita after a spectacular regional performance on Friday on its home court.
The Swathers, who shared the regional title with Central Plains with 20 points, did not win any individual titles, but were solid throughout.
Logan Gamble led the way by taking second in singles, while teammate Rhain Isaac was third. The No. 1 doubles team of Jorge Morales and Jeb Carlson placed third, defeating teammates Daniel Casimir and Isaac Decker to gain that distinction.
“I am thrilled to qualify our entire team for state,” Hesston coach Mark Dahlsten said. “The boys gave great effort today. I feel that we can compete for a trophy next week at state and that all our our guys have a chance to medal. I look forward to a few days of practice to fine-tune some things, but I like our chances.”
Gamble, who lost to Joey Oberle in a three-setter in the singles final, is making a second straight trip to state. For Isaac, it’s his first.
Morales and Carlson are old hands. This is the third state trip for Morales and second for Carlson.
Decker will be making his second state appearance and it’s the first for Casimir.
Ellsworth, riding Oberle, took third with 14 points. Other teams to score were Hoisington (2), Ellinwood (1) and Hillsboro (1).
