Earning a medal probably was the furthest thing from McPherson High golfer Kyler Hoppes’ mind after his first hole Tuesday in the AVCTL Championships at Turkey Creek.
Hoppes hit three balls into the water on No. 1 and finished the hole with a 10, which would normally sink any player for the rest of his round.
But he shook off the disaster and stayed poised, finishing with a 91 to earn eighth place as the Bullpups wound up taking third place as a team in the Division III portion of the event.
Hoppes shot a 49 on his front nine and came back with a 42.
Teammate Colton Geren shot a 93 to take ninth place as scores were unusually high on a day that featured ideal conditions. Hayes Schmid shot a 94 to tie for 10th, but lost in a playoff.
Augusta nipped Buhler by one stroke, 358-359, for the Division III title. Jackson Berning of Buhler was the individual champion with an 84, one shot better than Augusta’s Drew Hess.
MHS totaled a 373. Other MHS scores were Tyler Hoxie (95), Jayse Alexander (105) and Cooper Courtney (107).
Division IV featured better scoring as Wellington won the the title with a splendid 312, led by medalist Ty Wilson with a 74. He was one shot better than Rose Hill’s Peyton Austin, who is the son of PGA golfer Woody Austin.
Andale (332) was second in the team race, with Rose Hill third with 336.
