HAVEN — Of all the first-round regional softball games around Kansas on Monday, Hesston High’s 6-4 victory over Trinity Catholic may have qualified as the biggest stunner of them all.

The Celtics had entered the day 17-3 with visions of state dancing in their heads, while the Swathers were the No. 7 seed.

But the upstart Swathers stunned Trinity with a five-run second inning and then held off the Celtics to advance to the second round of the Class 3A regional.

Kaela Wade threw a strong game for Hesston, scattering six hits and fanning eight. Alaina Dunlavy came up big at the plate with a double and single, good for three RBIs. Makaiya Russell and Keiara Evancho added two hits as the Swathers had nine in the game.

The Swather play No. 3 seed Sedgwick in Wednesday's 3:30 semifinals.
