McPherson’s seventh-grade football team not only won its first game here Thursday, it won it in overwhelming fashion.
The Bullpups were all over Salina Lakewood from the very start and crushed the Mustangs 38-6 to improve to 1-2 on the season.
“Overall it was a great day for our guys,” Bullpup coach Brandt Busse said. “Extremely proud of the way are guys bounced back this week with a win. We will look to gain some more momentum next week when we play Maize.”
Jayce Schriner started the game with a kickoff return for a touchdown and moments later, Javyn Alexander returned an interception for a touchdown as it was practically over before it started.
Schriner then raced 50 yards for a touchdown, followed by a TD run Drew Waner.
Other scores were a TD pass from Kreighton Kanitz to Alexander, another TD run by Schriner and a 2-pointer from Kanitz to Blaise Hoover.
“The offensive line pulled together and made some big holes for our backfield,” Busse said. “Defensively we were stout. We ended up with three interceptions and a blocked punt. Alexander and (Eli) Clarke had a big day leading us in tackles again with Clarke compiling three sacks.”
Schriner ran for 104 yards and three scores, while Kanitz threw for 52 yards, 50 of those to Alexander.
