WINFIELD — McPherson High’s girls tennis team is probably glad it doesn’t have to see Wichita Collegiate at state play anymore now that the Bullpups are in Class 5A.
Collegiate showed why it most likely will waltz to the Class 4A state title by dominating the AVCTL Division III-IV Tournament on Monday.
The Spartans scored 67 points as they three of the four divisions, while Wellington took second with 50 and MHS was third with 43.
Other scores were Buhler (40), Winfield (37), Circle (25), El Dorado (15) and Augusta (3).
Both MHS doubles teams were third, with Taylor Bruce and CeAnna Allen playing No. 1, and sisters Sydney and Ashley Achilles playing No. 2.
In singles Rachel Carlson was fourth at No. 1 and Perrin Schneider was fifth at No. 2.
“Overall it wasn't a bad day,” MHS coach Tyler Brown said. “The team took third and three of our four divisions walked away with winning records today going 2-1. With a loaded league and powerhouse of Collegiate, it's awfully tough to be league champs. Collegiate will be the huge favorite in 4A to win state as they seem to be every year.”
The doubles division was difficult.
“Our doubles ran into some tough Buhler teams though in the semifinals, which put us in the third-place matches,” Brown said. “But they bounced back quick and were able to play with confidence and end the day on a high note.”
And singles was loaded as well.
“Perrin had a tough first round, but also ended the day with winning out the rest of her matches,” Brown said. “Rachel took care of business in the first round, but then came across two girls I'm sure will do will in the regional and will most likely go onto medal at state. The (No.) 1 singles draw had some tremendous talent. As always, the talent in our league doesn't disappoint. Anytime you can be on the podium as a team in our AVCTL Division III and IV, you’ve had a good day.”
MHS goes to Valley Center Saturday for the 5A regional.
