Mistaken identity, slamming doors, and plenty of laughs are in store when McPherson College Theatre Department presents “Lend Me A Tenor,” on October 18-20 in Brown Auditorium. While celebrating a century of theatre at the college, this production also marks several milestones for the theatre department.
The production continues a long tradition of Alumni Shows at McPherson College dating back some 25 years. Alumni will volunteer time to return to the McPherson College stage for a week to work alongside the student performers as guest artists. Students will perform on Thursday, October 18, alumni will take the stage on Friday, October 19 and a blended cast will perform on Saturday, October 20.
“We are very excited about the alumni joining us for this production,” Jd. Bowman, professor of theatre, said. “Five of the returning alumni were students at previous Alumni Shows, so this is a full-circle experience for them.”
Not only is the show part of the 2018 Homecoming activities, it is also offered in conjunction with the Friendship Hall gallery display celebrating 100 years of theatre at the college. The gallery exhibition will highlight the history of the program as well as include an introduction to the creative process behind “Lend Me A Tenor.” The gallery show will run through the end of October.
This particular production also marks a personal milestone for Professor Bowman. “Not only is this the one hundredth year of theatre for the college, but ‘Lend Me A Tenor’ marks my personal one-hundredth show with McPherson College.”
“Lend Me A Tenor” first appeared on Broadway in 1989 and received nine Tony Award nominations. Written by Ken Ludwig, the farce, set in 1934, is centered around a world-renown opera singer who is nowhere to be found minutes before his big performance. When a bumbling assistant dons the costume and persona of the singer to impress his girlfriend’s father, a recipe for comedic disaster begins.
A First Nighters mingle over canapés and mocktails for a 1930s reception will be held on Thursday, October 18 at 6:15 p.m. prior to the performance. Each performance will begin at 7:30 p.m. Reservations for Thursday’s reception can be made by contacting the theatre box office at (620) 242-0444 [email protected] Tickets are $5 each or $3.50 for students and seniors.
