MHS wrestlers nipped in opener

ANDALE — All it would have taken was for one match to flip and McPherson High’s wrestling team would have opened its season with a victory on Thursday.

Instead, Andale outlasted the painfully young Bullpups 41-36 but MHS coach Doug Kretzer hardly came away discouraged.

“For a first match of the year I thought our effort was really good,” Kretzer said. “We have quite a bit of inexperience on our team, so it was a learning experience for quite a few of our newcomers. All of the varsity wrestlers who got a win really did wrestle well. Some of the varsity wrestlers who lost actually wrestled quite tough, we just need to clean up a few things.  This match really could have gone either way, if we win one more match, we win the dual.”

The Bullpups were up 12-9 early, but a stretch of five Andale wins in six matches turned the tide.

Winners on the night for MHS were Andrew Trowbridge at 106, Ethan VanDorn at 120, Todd Graber at 145, Kaleb Jost at 170, Ross Regier at 195 and Ty Goss at 285. Addie Lanning posted two wins in JV action to highlight its effort.

MHS will be hosting a JV meet starting at 9 a.m. Saturday in the auxiliary gym. Next varsity action will be historic, as MHS will host county school Smoky Valley for the first time.
