PRATT — McPherson’s seventh-grade girls’ A-team had no trouble with Pratt’s eighth-grade A-team in a 35-19 basketball victory Monday, their 10th without a loss.
MMS led 12-2 after a quarter, which basically decided the game. Claire Yowell tossed in 10 points to pace the ‘Pups.
“The girls played well again today,” MMS coach Jacque Gehrt said. “We shot the ball better than last week, led by Claire Yowell who knocked down 3 threes. As a team, though, we continued to struggle from the free throw line. We were only 8 of 18. We face Lakewood for the first time on Thursday, so we have some things to work on before then.”
The MMS B-team played the Pratt A-team and lost, 26-23. Maggie Leaf’s seven points topped the Bullpups.
“As coaches, all we ask is that the girls give it all they have and never give up,” Gehrt said. “Today they did just that. Pratt played man-to-man defense, which many of these girls haven't seen all season. I thought we handled it better in the second half, but still struggled to score. We were down two with a few seconds left, and we scored on an inbounds play to tie it up at the end of regulation. We couldn't knock down free throws at the end of the game, going 3 of 10 in the fourth quarter and overtime. Our B-team girls were playing an A-team and still competed until the very end. Their effort and teamwork never wavered.”
MMS won a C-game, 22-15. Brooke Miller’s six points were tops for MMS.
“We only played seven girls during this game and they competed very hard,” Gehrt said. Addie (Fitzmorris) and Hannah (Dossett) scored their first points of the season. I'm very proud of the all these girls.”
