It had to happen sooner or later. It was just too much of a natural fit.
McPherson High and Smoky Valley will finally meet in a historic dual wrestling match here Thursday night in the MHS auxiliary gym.
The action begins at 6 p.m.
The schools’ football teams have met each of the last two years in district play, not to mention MHS and Smoky Valley clashed in sub-state boys basketball last season.
Now the action shifts to the mat. The Bullpups are 0-1, narrowly losing to Andale in their season opener. The Vikings’ last action was Saturday at Riley County where they went 1-1 with the win over Riley County and the loss to Andover.
“It should be fun, it looks like both teams will be full,” MHS coach Doug Kretzer said. “It will probably come down to pins.”
The dual starts off a busy week for the Bullpups. They’ll head out early Friday for a big two-day tournament at Colby.
Smoky Valley coach Ben Elliott is excited as well.
“We are excited for the short trip south.” Elliott said. “We have the upmost respect for the McPherson program and look forward to competing against them.”
