GREAT BEND — McPherson High’s Kyler Jost continued his solid swimming season Tuesday by winning the 500 freestyle to top the Bullpups’ performances in the Great Bend Invitational.

Jost has come a long way since the first meet as he lopped 7 seconds off his best time and dominated the race from beginning to end. It was his second individual win of the season.

Jost also joined with Zane Richter, Eric Gaeddert and Jorit Obenlueneschloss to qualify for state in the 200 medley relay. Obenlueneschloss is a German exchange student and MHS coach Bonnie Sue Fisher is hoping he’ll be able to stay in McPherson the entire year so he can compete at Topeka in February.

There were other good performances. Richter was second in the 100 butterfly in a season-best time and Gaeddert was third in the 200 individual medley, slicing a stunning 17 seconds off his best time. Spencer Steinert had a PR in the 200 freestyle.

“I told the boys that we have just finished the first third of our season,” Fisher said. “We have been able to get in relatively good shape and now have three meets to show us what we need to work on.”

She admits there’s still plenty of work ahead.

“The next three weeks are going to be very important if they are going to swim well in January,” she said. “They need to build up enough yardage over this short break from meets so that we have not only enough power to make it through those January meets, but also to hold us up into Febraury and the AVCTL's and state. Every yard that they swim during this time is like making a deposit into a savings account. As long as they keep depositing more and more yardage, and can keep from having to make any withdrawals —  such as overcoming an illness or injury — then those deposits will actually grow with interest so that they have enough left in each account for a solid finish. It will take an extra amount of dedication and self-discipline to stay focused over the holidays and come back strong.”
