McPherson’s seventh-grade A-boys gutted out a hard-earned 44-34 victory over Salina Lakewood on Thursday at Park School.
The Bullpups were down 20-16 at the half before charging back despite dealing with foul trouble. MMS also was gold at the foul line, making 11 of 14.
“We have been working very hard on our free throw shooting during practice and it is good to see it finally pay off,” MMS coach Treg Fawl said as his team improved to 5-1.
Balance was a key as Kyler Hoppes (12), Gabe Hoover (11) and Brandon Wilson (10) all hit for double figures.
The B-team won a thrilling 23-22 verdict, overcoming a 16-9 halftime deficit. Jarrod Nowak led the Bullpups with nine points.
“They were all extremely excited because they had lost to this team at the beginning of the season,” Fawl said. “I am seeing major improvements in both the A- and B-team and it is a good feeling for both teams to get a win heading into break.”
The Bullpups are off until Jan. 7 when they play at Emporia.
