SALINA — McPherson’s seventh-grade girls traveled to Salina Saturday just to play Great Bend.
The Bullpups swept the neutral-court basketball matchup.
The A-team had more trouble than expected with Great Bend, as it finally pulled away to a 35-24 victory. MMS led only 27-21 going into the fourth quarter.
Lauren Hein led the balanced offense with nine points.
“A much better shooting day helped us gain this win,” said MMS coach Jacque Gehrt, whose team had lost for the first time its last game out. “Great Bend played us tougher today than they did earlier this season, and I thought our team did a better job of handling the pressure and looking to be aggressive.”
MMS is now 11-1 and is off until after Christmas.
The B-team was a 33-1 winner, that’s right, 33-1. Great Bend made a free throw in the first quarter, then was held scoreless the rest of the way.
Katelyn Beam fired in 11 points to lead the Bullpups, who take a 9-1 record into the break.
“Our team stepped up and played great defense today,” Gerhrt said. “Everyone was very active and communicated well, which led to many scoring opportunities.”
