COLBY — The point of McPherson High’s young wrestling team competing this past weekend in the Colby Invitational was to get plenty of experience.

The Bullpups certainly did that.

The MHS wrestlers were exposed to seven matches each over the two days, which resulted in the Bullpups finishing ninth out of 18 teams.

“I thought the team really wrestled hard,” MHS coach Doug Kretzer said. “We had our ups and downs, but many of the kids stepped up at times. The biggest thing we took away from this tournament was a lot of experience. Todd Graber wrestled excellent, beating many quality opponents.”

Graber clearly was MHS’ star of the weekend, going 6-1 at 145 pounds. Others with winning records were Cole Kretzer at 113, Alex Grennan at 220 and Michael McKinney at 285.

MHS will earn a lot more experience this weekend in the Royal Valley Invitational at Hoyt, as again matches will again be aplenty.
