Three sign to play volleyball for Swedes

LINDSBORG — Bethany College volleyball coach Nathalea Stephenson has announced the signings of three players for next season.

• Shelby Bender — Bender, a setter and right-front hitter, comes to Bethany from Skyline High School in Pratt. She was a varsity volleyball player her junior and senior year. She also competed in track in the javelin, shot put, discus and 4 x 100 relay.

Her senior volleyball season, Bender recorded 51 kills, a .077 hitting percentage, six total blocks, 138 digs, 49 aces and a 92.9 serving percentage.

She also was involved in Student Council, Pep Club, Kays Club, FCCLA, FCA, Kiwanis Club, and Scholars Bowl as well as tutoring and volunteering.

"Shelby is one of those players that will do whatever she is asked to do and do it to the best of her ability," Stephenson said. "She had to play different positions at Skyline and has been successful at it. For us, Shelby will be setting and watching her transition to that position shows her willingness to be the best.  She is a quick learner and is always working to make herself better, which helps her team.  It will be exciting to watch Shelby develop as a Swede."

Bender is the daughter of Shelly Bender. She has a 3.6 high school grade point average, and plans to major in forensic science and chemistry. 

• Natasha Allmer — Allmer, an outside hitter, comes to Bethany from Hoxie High School where she played both basketball volleyball all four years. She is a four-year volleyball letter winner, earning first-team All-League honors for three years and first-team All-State honors for one year. She was also on the Honor Roll.

"Natasha is one of those players that will put the ball down for you," Stephenson said. "She is coming from a program that is strong in fundamentals and has been to state several times.  She is a consistent player with a good arm swing. Natasha is going to be one of those players that will not only push herself, but others. We are excited to have her in our program."

Allmer is the daughter of Emma Eckhardt and Rod Allmer. She has a 3.22 high school grade point average and plans to major in criminal justice.

• Conner Stolley — Stolley, an outside hitter and back row player, comes to Bethany from John F. Kennedy High School in Denver, Colo., where she played varsity volleyball all four years. She is a four-year letterwinner in both volleyball and academics. During her high school career, she was named honorable mention All-League, second-team All-League, first-team All-League and Academic All-State.

"We are happy to have Conner as a Swede for next year,"Stephenson said. "She brings a wealth of volleyball experience having played not only at the high school level, but also club.  She is a versatile player and it will be exciting to watch her grow as a player."

Stolley is the daughter of David and Stephanie Stolley. She has a 3.98 high school grade point average and plans to major in psychology. Stolley's sister, Kierstin, is a sophomore softball player at Bethany.
