John Hawk from the McPherson Area Solid Waste Utility informed the McPherson City Commission at their Monday meeting of the utility's intent to begin single stream recycling in McPherson the week of May 19th, 2014.

Hawk said, "What that means is that all recyclables can be put into the container mixed, without having to sort them or separate them. It makes it much more convenient for the customer to participate."

MASWU has been doing curbside single stream recycling for some time now in Inman and Lindsborg and feels it has the bugs worked out and can now handle the volume of recycling McPherson would present.

MASWU residential customers in McPherson will receive a new blue recycling container very similar to their current trash container. Recycling will be picked up twice a month on the same day as trash pickup. Trash will continue to be picked up each week.

The current drop off site at the transfer station will remain open for any recycling that cannot fit into the curbside containers.
