The first step in the potential construction of a Love's Travel Stop and Country Store in McPherson was approved at Tuesday night's McPherson City Planning Commission meeting.

The City Planning Commission approved the Zoning change from the (county) B-1 Interstate Business to the (city) B-6 Interchange Business District.

According to Steve Walters, the Love's representative at the Tuesday night meeting, the second step in the process is to bring a Planned Unit Development request to the Planning Commission next month to conform the site to Love's planning standards. If everything works out, Love's would like to be breaking ground in June of 2014.

Love's would include a truck parking and fueling facility, a convenience store with gasoline sales, a restaurant and a truck tire maintenance facility on the tract just east of the interchange at I-135 and Highway 56.

All exits from Love's would be on to Highway 56 and would have to meet KDOT standards. Love's would also have to work with the Board of Public Utilities to increase the water availability at the site.

The McPherson City Commission is still required to approve the zoning request and the annexation of the land before Love's can go forward.
