McPherson’s seventh-grade girls pushed their basketball record to 12-1 here Thursday by stopping Salina South, 36-22.
Riley Hett poured in 13 points to pace the Bullpups while Lauren Hein just missed double figures with nine.
“The girls were anxious to get back on the court and we came out with some great pressure defense,” MMS coach Jacque Gehrt said. “We continue to share the ball well and aren't afraid to shoot it. I am proud of how aggressive we were on both defense and offense.”
The B-game was much closer as the Bullpups slipped past South, 20-17. MMS permitted just one point in the second quarter.
Meghan Smith led the Bullpups with six points as they improved to 10-1.
“The girls managed to come away with a hard-fought victory,” Gehrt said. “It was a close game throughout and was tied at 17 with under two minutes to play. Megan Eisenbarth knocked down a free throw to take the lead and then we got a few defensive stops. Ashlie Stout sealed the win with a basket with only a few seconds left. The B-team was without their leader, Katelyn Beam, who is out with an injury, but coach Love and I are very proud of all the girls' effort on defense and for staying tough until the end.”
