Stress-free win for MHS boys

Kurt Kinnamon must have been expecting a traditional McPherson High-Hutchinson nailbiter here Thursday night.

Kinnamon’s blood pressure was so elevated an hour before the game that his father had to take him to the hospital as a precaution.

After being given a clean bill of health, Kinnamon returned just in time for tipoff and his Bullpup team obviously was concerned because it took all the stress out of the showdown by blowing out the Salthawks, 59-32.

The lopsidedness of the game was shocking, as this one was a no-contest from the start. Hutchinson, a Class 6A school, recently had knocked off a very good 5A team in Kapaun and figured to punish the Bullpups with its physical play.

MHS, however, led 13-4 after a quarter, 26-9 at the half and 45-19 after three quarters as its defense strafed the struggling Salthawks, who were just 10 of 32 for the game and turned it over 19 times.

“Really good defensively,” Kinnamon said of his team, which takes a 5-0 record into Friday’s game at Winfield. “I usually put up a number of different things up on the board and the No. 1 thing I put up tonight was ‘don’t get out-toughed.’ And I don’t think we got out-toughed. You know we’ve got a bunch of scrawny looking guys, but we’ve got a bunch of tough guys — tough, scrawny guys. I was proud of the defensive effort.”

Kyler Kinnamon, who before the game told his father that he wouldn’t play if he didn’t go to the hospital, led the way with 18 points and seven assists The rest of the scoring was balanced, as MHS was 18 of 34 rom the field and 19 of 27 at the line while turning it over only 11 times.

Radley Arnold led Hutchinson with nine.

The MHS JVs were surprised 44-36 despite 14 points by Avery Gabel and 10 by Marcus McDaniel. The freshmen prevailed, 46-36. Brock Malm’s 14 points led the way.

MHS has no bargain Friday as Winfield is considered the No. 2 team in AVCTL Division III behind the Bullpups.
