NEWTON — McPherson High’s Kyler Jost lopped 8 seconds off his best time in the 500 freestyle Thursday during the Newton Invitational to take third place in the event to highlight the Bullpups’ swimming performances.

“He is now less than 10 seconds off of the state qualifying time and has made the consideration time, which means we will have an entry in the 500 free at state for the first time in several years,” MHS coach Bonnie Sue Fisher said.

While MHS didn’t have a lot of high placers, Fisher liked what she saw.

“Every one of our swimmers dropped time in at least one event, which speaks really well for how hard they worked during the holiday break time,” Fisher said. “It takes a lot of dedication to stay in shape through Christmas and New Year's and all of the days that we are not able to work out as a team.”

Fisher also was pleased with the fourth-place 200 freestyle relay team, which included Jost, Zane Richter, Ryen Trost and Eric Gaeddert.

“Those four boys in their individual 50 free race scored a total of 17 points and then added another 22 with their relay finish,” Fisher said. “We will continue to work on basics such as tighter streamlines and faster turns in our meet this weekend in El Dorado.”
