EL DORADO — Kyler Jost continued his big season Saturday for the McPherson High swim team in the El Dorado Invitational.
Jost had the Bullpups’ top finish as he grabbed the gold medal in the 100 butterfly in 58.97, which is a second faster than his time at the state meet last year.
The Bullpups, who were missing standout Zane Richter because he was attending another school activity, also medaled in the 200 freestyle relay by taking third. The team included Jost, Max Howe, Ryen Trost and Eric Gaeddert.
MHS finished in the middle of the pack as a team, taking eighth out of 16.
“The one thing that I have been able to experience these past two years with smaller teams is that everyone knows how important they are and that each point counts,” MHS coach Bonnie Sue Fisher said. “This year's freshmen, Eric Gaeddert and Max Howe, know that they are needed now, not three years from now as seniors. Gaeddert added points in the 200 individual medley and the 100 breast. He dropped over 3 seconds to place fourth. Max was a very important part of all three relays and also scored in the 50 free with a personal best time.”
There were other standouts as well.
“Sophomore Spencer Steinert continues to show his character by attacking the longer races — the 200 and the 500 free,” Fisher said. “Last year's improvements were amazing and he again dropped another 5 seconds off of his 500, bringing him extremely close to the state qualifying time.
“The swimmer that really impressed us all was first-year junior Dalyn Chapman. He led the whole team by dropping almost 17 seconds in his 100 free. He just took off the block and never looked back. I have no doubt that by AVCTLs he will also be adding points to the Bullpups’ total.”
MHS has a busy week with two meets, starting on Tuesday at Hutchinson, then Thursday at Salina.
