MAIZE — McPherson High’s Austin Eldredge is making up for lost time.

Eldredge, who missed the first month of the season with a hand injury, has been the Bullpups’ top wrestler since the Christmas break. He added to his resume Saturday by taking second place in the Maize Invitational.

Eldredge went 4-1 on the day. The other Bullpup to place was Todd Graber, who was fourth at 145.

MHS was 10th out of 11 teams, most of which were 6A and 5A schools. Emporia won the meet, with Maize a half-point ahead of crosstown rival Maize South for second.

“We continue to get good mat experience.” MHS coach Doug Kretzer said. “This was an 11-team pool-type round-robin tournament. The team showed great resolve and does not quit. (Shaden) Swaim, (Ethan) VanDorn, (Jose) Gloria, (Kobe) Unruh, (Kaleb) Jost and (Michael) McKinney had good wins at the end of the day to build off of.”

MHS makes its second home appearance of the season Thursday with Winfield coming to town for an AVCTL Division III dual.
