The Smoky Valley USD 400 School Board initially voted 7-0 on Monday to close the Marquette Elementary School and bus students to Lindsborg beginning next school year.

USD 400 Superintendent Glen Suppes told KWCH-TV that the decision was made because of budget cuts and the smaller population of the elementary school. He said they had been trying to save the elementary school for years.

Suppes says most of the staff from the school should be able to keep their jobs, but advises there will be some job loss in the district.

Final approval on the decision is scheduled for February 10th.
