NEWTON — McPherson High’s bowlers made the proper adjustments Tuesday in their season debut as they rolled their way past Newton and Cheney in a triangular.

The Bullpup boys compiled a 2,304, well ahead of Newton (2,137) and Cheney (1,851). The girls’ 2,078 easily outpaced Newton (1,690) and Cheney (1,613).

Bullpup coach Herb Halinski said his teams was caught somewhat off guard by the lane conditions, but recovered for the impressive victories.

“It was a wake-up call for the bowlers,” Halinski said. “It was a fairly slick lane condition and most of them haven't seen that before. The outside part of the lane was really slick and if you got the ball out there, it didn't want to hook back. The more experienced players were able to get more to the inside part of the lane where the ball would hook. I am proud of them as most everyone bowled bad the first game, but were able to come back and do fairly well.  It was a good learning experience for the team and they were ready to come home and practice.”

Joel Morey led the boys with 617, as he came out strong with games of 221 and 226. Carl Frazier and Jeff Reed shook off slow starts by bowling big games in their final two attempts.

Crystal Nutter topped the girls with 537, which included a monster 237 game.

The MHS JV girls had no trouble, scoring 1,670 pins to 1,166 for Newton and 1,080 for Cheney. Alexis Kieffer’s 452 paced the Bullpups.

The MHS JV boys lost a dual match to Newton, 1,773-1,512. Jacob Krehbiel was tops with 410.
