HUTCHINSON — McPherson High’s swimmers were relay specialists on Tuesday.

The Bullpups sparkled by winning all three relay events, helping them to a second-place team finish in the Hutchinson Triangular.

Hutchinson’s sheer numbers advantage enabled it to score 381 points, but MHS’ mighty eight-man band maximized its points to tally 230. Central Christian (130) was the third team in the field.

“The 'A' relays scored a total of 96 points and our 'B' medley relay with Dalyn Chapman, Garrett Cline, Max Howe and Spencer Steinert also scored very high with an additional 20 points,” MHS coach Bonnie Sue Fisher said.

Fisher couldn’t have been more proud of her team as she said it performed at peak efficiency.

“There is absolutely nothing more than I could have asked these boys to do tonight,” Fisher said. “They rose to every occasion and made the meet a lot of fun to watch. Final team points landed us in second place, however due to the size of the Hutchinson team they were able to enter multiple swimmers in  every race. It is amazing to realize that our eight swimmers can come so close to beating a team with over  40. Considering the amount of pool time and space that we have to work with, I have no doubt that if the playing field was level, we would be winning over half of our meets. As it is, we focus on  individual results and obtaining state qualifying times.”

Fisher said her team’s focus has a lot to do with it.

“The positive attitude surrounding the team this year is a joy to work with,” she said. “The productivity that I can get out of their workouts is the highest in the league. Although it would be great to have more swimmers, I wouldn't trade any of these guys.”

Members of the relay teams were Zane Richter, Eric Gaeddert, Kyler Jost and Ryen Trost (medley and 200 free relays), and Trost, Spencer Steinert, Max Howe and Richter (400 freestyle).

Gaeddert also had a first in the 50 free and second in the 100 breast, while Jost and Richter were 1-2 in the 100 butterfly.

MHS goes to Salina Thursday.
