This was supposed to be one of the toughest challenges of the season for the McPherson eighth-grade boys basketball team.
Junction City came to town Thursday with a tall and quick team. But the Bullpups, apparently inspired by the potential for a rare close game, were close to perfection in the first half.
MMS’ suffocating, trapping defense forced countless turnovers as it raced to a 45-9 halftime lead before going on for a 68-23 rout.
Mason Alexander lit it up from 3-point early and went on to finish with 18 points, while Ben Pyle scored 14 and Drew Labertew added 12. Thomas Diggs just missed doubles with nine. The team also had an incredible passing game, as seemingly every score came off an assist.
The Bullpups are now 8-0 on the season.
The B-team crushed Junction City as well, 50-19. Nathan Vontz led a balanced attack with nine points. A whopping 11 Bullpups marked in the book as they improved to 7-1.
