EL DORADO — McPherson High’s girls were able to name their margin Friday night against winless El Dorado.

They settled on 30, 57-27.

The victory finally pushed the Bullpups over the .500 mark for the first time this season at 5-4, but the key is they’re 5-0 through the first round of AVCTL Division III play as they attempt to repeat as league champion.

After slumbering to a 6-3 deficit to open the game, the light went off for MHS as it outscored the Wildcats 34-8 the rest of the half to lead 37-14 and the rout was on.

"Maybe one of the best things to happen was we did fall behind 6-3 and it kind of woke the girls up a little bit," MHS coach Chris Strathman said. "I think we ended the (first) quarter on about a 15 or 16-1 run, which is really good. Really, we started slow down here last year, too."

Abby Pedersen was the only Bullpup in double figures with 14 points, while Janae Barnes and reserve Cassidy Wedel followed with nine and eight points, respectively. Wedel had a personal 8-0 run in the second quarter that blew the game open.

"There's a lot of things we can take positive from tonight," Strathman said. "We really tried to focus at halftime about trying to get the ball inside better, becoming a little more balanced offensively and not rely so much on just penetration and the 3-ball."

MHS won the JV game 60-15, as Wedel scored 12 points and Morgan Howard added 10. Eight Bullpups in all scored.

Only three quarters were played in the C-game, with the Bullpups emerging with a 37-18 behind 16 points by Emma Yowell.

The Bullpups play their final game before the Mid America Classic on Tuesday when they host Circle in a girls-only game.
