McPherson High's girls will take some momentum into next week's Mid America Classic.

In their final tuneup before next week's big event, the Bullpups made it five victories in their last six games with a 47-33 triumph over Circle Tuesday at the Roundhouse.

MHS, now 6-4, is assured of being the MAC's No. 2 seed, with Manhattan No. 1. The pairings will be announced Wednesday.

The Bullpups' trapping defense keyed an early double-digit lead, which reached 14 points by halftime, 31-17.

The second half was a different story, though, as both teams turned the ball over consistently and the result was just 16 points by each team. The Bullpups, after a relatively clean first half, miscued 13 times after the break and had 22 for the game.

"We got up 41-21 and called the press off at that time," MHS coach Chris Strathman said. "Then we really relaxed — relaxed on both ends way too much and got careless. We gave up some offensive rebounds to the shooters even, following their own shots, and that's not acceptable… we just didn't do a very good job of closing out the game."

The Bullpups' Abby Pedersen tallied 13 first-half points and went on to finish with 15, while Ashtyn Schieferecke supplied the inside presence with 11 points.

"She (Schieferecke) was very active tonight," Strathman said. "I would have guessed she had more than five or six boards or whatever it says here. She had some good finishes, some good follows on offensive boards and stick-backs."

Pedersen was a nightmare on the defensive end for the T-Birds, as she came up with six thefts.

The Bullpup JVs came out firing for a 59-34 triumph. Emma Yowell led the way with 17 points, while also in doubles were Schieferecke (11) and Paige Schmidt (10).

In the ninth-grade game, only two quarters were played due to a lack of players for Circle. The T-Birds, though, hung tough and lost only 26-19. Kamryn Collins led the Bullpups with seven points.
