The McPherson High girls’ recent surge elevated them to the No. 2 seed for next week’s Mid America Classic, as the basketball tournament bracket was announced today.

MHS, which has won five of its last six decisions to improve to 6-4, plays at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 30, against 4-6 Gardner-Edgerton.

Of course that means it’s another matchup of old friends, as MHS’ Chris Strathman was the longtime assistant to Scott Schaefer, now coach of Gardner-Edgerton.

Also on MHS’ side of the bracket, 5-4 Andale plays 5-5 Olathe East at 6 p.m. Thursday.

In the opening-round afternoon games, Shawnee Mission South (5-4) takes on Wichita Northwest (5-5) at 3 p.m., with top-seed and tourney favorite Manhattan (8-1) playing 0-10 Hays at 4:30.

Friday’s schedule has the same times, with loser’s bracket games at 3 and 4:30, with winner’s bracket games at 6 and 7:30.

Saturday’s final round gets under way at 2 p.m. with the seventh-place game, with the 19th annual event wrapping up with the 7:15 p.m. title game.
