Buhler got off to a 4-0 start against Lawrence Free State on Thursday in the third game of the 50th annual McPherson Invitational.

The Crusaders should have stopped right there, because that was as good as it was going to get.

The Firebirds responded by scoring the final 17 points of the first quarter and were able to put it on cruise control the rest of the way for a 67-25 victory.

Free State, which has never won the tournament, sprinted to a 32-12 halftime lead, with a monster jackhammer dunk by Kahdre Lane right before the half providing the exclamation point.

The Firebirds were, well, on fire as they made 14 of 23 shots in the half, 13 of 18 inside the arc. They finished the game 26 of 45, not to mention 11 of 13 at the foul line.

Justin Narcomey and Weston Hack led the Firebirds with 14 and 11 points, respectively. Jace Williams, who scored 10 points, had Buhler's highlight of the night when he threw down a over-the-head slam dunk. The Crusaders were just 12 of 37 from the field and never made it to the foul line.

Free State coach Chuck Law admitted he was somewhat surprised his team would be playing Wichita North on Friday.

"I thought we'd be playing McPherson, but Wichita North played really well," Law said. "They have a lot of experience and are a good team."
