HAYS — It was a rare loss Thursday for McPherson’s seventh-grade A-girls as Hays pulled off a 31-20 victory, only the second defeat for the Bullpups against 13 wins.
MMS was behind the whole way, down 9-4 after a quarter, 15-11 at half and 23-15 going into the fourth quarter.
“It was a tough shooting night for the girls,” MMS coach Jacque Gehrt said. “We were outmuscled inside, especially in the first half, and struggled to make a basket from the perimeter. However, the girls never gave up and kept fighting the entire time.”
Jaycee Burghart led MMS with eight points.
The B-team did not permit a first-half point, which keyed a 36-9 win. It was 17-0 after a quarter and 20-0 at the half.
“The girls were very aggressive tonight,” Gehrt said. “We were able to cut down on our turnovers, and our defense led to many steals and easy baskets.”
Katelyn Beam’s 11 points led the way, with Alaina Diggs contributing nine.
MMS wraps up a terrific season Tuesday at Great Bend.
